Easy Banana Lactation Muffins
Lactation aids come in all different forms, shapes and sizes. They vary from delicious snacks, to a medically prescribed pill. It can be hard to choose the right aid for you.
What are lactation aids? Basically anything that you can eat or take to help your body increase or improve milk supply. Obviously I am talking about breast milk and this post is aimed at breastfeeding mothers... I am not going to lie though, eating a cookie and having a carton of milk appear in the fridge as a result would be kind of awesome.
Do they work? Absolutely! However, no matter what you take or what aid you use, you will need to either express or feed regularly to ensure the supply. I use cookies and muffins to help my supply, not only is my milk supply enough to feed my newborn every 2 hours for about an hour, but I can also express about 120ml straight after feeding on each breast.
Before we get started, I know it is isn't always possible to spend time making cookies or muffins when you have a baby or like me, a baby and a toddler. So Nudie Baby has Chocolate Chip Lactation cookies and Lactation Muffins available for purchase if you live in Australia.
For those who prefer to make their own, here is an amazing recipe for Banana Muffins (you can add chocolate chips too if you like).
For this recipe you will need:
4 ripened bananas
1/3 cup coconut oil
1 cup of sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons of brewers yeast
2 tablespoons flax seed meal or ground flax seed
1 cup of flour
1/2 cup of rolled oats
1 cup chocolate chips (optional - I recommend using them as it adds a little extra sweetness from the brewers yeast bitterness)
Lets begin.
1) Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius and line a muffin tray with muffin cups.
2) Peel your bananas and mash them well or put through the food processor, melt your coconut oil and add it to the bananas.
3) Add the vanilla essence and egg and mix well until well combined.
4) In a seperate bowl combine flour, brewers yeast, baking powder, flax seed then add into the banana mix, blend well.
5) Add in rolled oats and chocolate chips (if using them) and mix well.
6) Fill the muffin cups 3/4 of the way (this allows room for the muffins to rise whilst cooking)
7) Bake for about 30-40 minutes or until a skewer comes out dry when poked through the middle of a muffin.
